This is a timeline of the events in Middle-earth. Items in italics are from the lore of the books/game and may or may not involve any player characters. These were all pulled from Chronicle of Arda or hobbled together from quests and such in the game. Anything that's specific to LotRO will be marked by (). Feel free to add your own events to the timeline but please refrain from making your own posts italics or changing anyone else's events without speaking to them first.

For ease of navigation the timeline is broken into 500 year segments but this is to aid reference only and does not imply any actual division.

  • The Hobbits of the Fallohide and Stoor strains wander west across the Misty Mountains.

  • The Nazgûl reappear in Middle-earth. Angmar is founded in the far north.
  • The Hobbits travel westwards. Some reach the Bree-land and settle there.

  • Death of King Calmacil of Gondor. He is succeeded by his son and Regent, who becomes Rómendacil II.

  • Death of King Malvegil of Arthedain. He is succeeded by his son Argeleb I.

1356

  • A group of Stoors migrate back eastward across the Misty Mountains, and settle in the Vales of Anduin.
  • Argeleb I dies in battle with Rhudaur. He is succeeded by his son Arveleg I.

1366

  • Death of King Rómendacil II of Gondor. He is succeeded by his son Valacar.

1409

  • The Witch-king of Angmar invades the northern kingdoms.
  • Arveleg I is slain in an attack on Amon Sûl. He is succeeded by his son Araphor.

1432

  • Death of King Valacar of Gondor. The succession of his son Eldacar is disputed, and civil war begins in Gondor.

1437

  • The burning of Osgiliath, and the loss of its palantír. Eldacar flees from Gondor.

1447

  • Eldacar returns from the east and reclaims the Crown of Gondor, slaying Castamir the Usurper.

1448

  • Castamir's sons escape to Umbar, and form the beginnings of the Corsairs.

  • Probable date of the birth of Argeleb son of Araphor, later King Argeleb II of Arthedain.

  • The year of the Great Plague, and the appearance of the Barrow-wights in the Barrow-downs.
  • In Gondor, King Telemnar and all his children sicken and die.

  • Tarondor removes the seat of the King of Gondor from Osgiliath to Minas Anor. The decay of Osgiliath begins.

  • Death of Argeleb II. He is succeeded by his son Arvegil.

  • The first attacks of the Wainriders occur.

  • Death of Narmacil II in battle with the Wainriders. He is succeeded by his son Calimehtar.

  • Probable date of the birth of Arvedui son of Araphant, later King of Arthedain.

  • Death of Araval. He is succeeded as King of Arthedain by his son Araphant.

  • The Wainriders are defeated on Dagorlad by Calimehtar of Gondor.

  • The White Tower is built in Minas Anor by King Calimehtar.

  • Probable date of the birth of Eärnur, later the last King of Gondor.

  • Death of Calimehtar. He is succeeded as King of Gondor by his son Ondoher.

1940

  • Wedding of Arvedui, heir to the kingdom of Arthedain and Fíriel, daughter of King Ondoher of Gondor.

1944

  • King Ondoher of Gondor is slain with both his sons.
  • Gondor is assaulted simultaneously by the armies of Khand, Harad and the Wainriders. The Battle of the Camp.
  • Arvedui lays claim to the throne of Gondor.

1945

  • The Crown of Gondor is granted to Eärnil II.

1964

  • Death of Araphant. He is succeeded by his son Arvedui.

1974

  • The forces of Angmar capture Fornost; the remnant of the North-kingdom is destroyed.
  • Arvedui, last of the Kings of Arthedain, is drowned in the Icebay of Forochel.

1975

  • Eärnur of Gondor brings a fleet to the north. Too late to save the North-kingdom, he avenges its loss at the Battle of Fornost. Angmar is destroyed.

1976

  • The Chieftainship of the Dúnedain is established by Aranarth son of Arvedui.

1977

  • A band of Northmen are led by Frumgar to settle in the far northern Vales of Anduin, where they found the Éothéod.

1979

  • Bucca of the Marish is the made the first of the Shire-thains.

c.1980

  • Return of the Nazgûl to Mordor.
  • The Dwarves of Moria unleash Durin's Bane. King Durin VI is slain by it.

1981

  • Náin I is slain. The last remaining Dwarves flee from Durin's Bane in Khazad-dûm.
  • Loss of Amroth.

1982

  • Loss of Nimrodel.
  • Probable date for the birth of Esslar.

1991

1998

  • Death of Pelendur. He is succeeded as Steward to Eärnil II by his son Vorondil.

1999

  • After years of wandering, the exiles of Khazad-dûm found Erebor.

2000

  • The Nazgûl emerge from Mordor and assault Minas Ithil.

  • Approximate date of the slaying of Scatha the Worm by Fram of the Éothéod.

  • Capture of Minas Ithil by the Nazgûl. It is renamed Minas Morgul, and Minas Anor is also renamed Minas Tirth, the Tower of Guard.

  • Birth of Galador son of Imrazôr, later to become the first Lord of Dol Amroth.

  • Death of Vorondil the Hunter. He is succeeded as Steward to Eärnil II by his son Mardil.

  • Death of Eärnil II. He is succeeded as King of Gondor by his son Eärnur.

  • Eärnur, the last King of Gondor, is lost. The Stewards now rule in the King's name.

  • The inception of the Revised Calendar of Mardil Voronwë, known as the Stewards' Reckoning.

  • Beginning to suspect that the power in Dol Guldur may be Sauron, Gandalf goes there. Sauron withdraws into the east, and the time known as the Watchful Peace begins.

  • Galador son of Imrazôr becomes the first Prince of Dol Amroth.

  • The Rohirrim ride to the aid of Gondor and are victorious in the Battle of the Field of Celebrant. They are given the land of Calenardhon (Rohan) to dwell in, and Eorl the Young becomes its first King.

  • Likely date of birth of Húrin son of Hallas, who later ruled Gondor as Steward Húrin II.

  • To avenge his father's death, Thráin II leads the Dwarves against the Orcs: the War of the Dwarves and Orcs begins.

  • Death of King Fréaláf of Rohan. He is succeeded by his son Brytta.

  • The Battle of Azanulbizar (Dimrill Dale). The War of the Dwarves and Orcs ends with the death of Azog.

  • Orcs from the north begin to trouble the Rohirrim

  • Dwarves led by Thráin II and Thorin Oakenshield settle in the Blue Mountains

  • Thráin is captured by Sauron, who thus recovers the last of the Seven Rings of the Dwarves. Unaware of his father's fate, Thráin's son Thorin becomes King of Durin's Folk.

  • Birth of Hob Gammidge.

  • Death of Thain Fortinbras I of the Shire. He is succeeded by his son Gerontius, who becomes famous as the Old Took.
  • Death of Arathorn I. He is succeeded as Chieftain of the Dúnedain by his son Argonui.

  • Gandalf enters Dol Guldur once again and discovers Thráin II imprisoned there. Thráin dies soon afterwards, but not before giving Gandalf a map and key.

  • King Walda of Rohan is attacked by Orcs near Dunharrow and slain. He is succeeded by his son Folca.
  • The White Council discover proof that the Necromancer of Dol Guldur is Sauron returned. Gandalf urges an immediate attack, but Saruman rejects this.

  • Birth of Belba Baggins.

  • Birth of Thorin's nephew Fíli.

  • King Folca of Rohan dies after being wounded by the Boar of Everholt. He is succeeded by his son Folcwine.
  • Ruby Bolger is born in the Shire.

  • Death of Steward Belecthor II, and of the White Tree of Minas Tirith. Belecthor is succeeded by his son, Thorondir.
